The TKL8255 Single Board Computer

The TKL8255 is a PICMG 1.3 Single Board Computer supporting 5th or 6th generation Intel Xeon E3-1200 or select 6th or 7th generation Intel Core i3/i5/i7 processors formally known as Skylake and Kaby Lake respectively, and up to four, standard DDR4-2400 memory DIMMs with ECC. The board’s two dual-channel DDR4-2400 memory interfaces support four standard DIMM sockets for a 64GB maximum system memory capability when using 16GB DDR4 DIMMs. All available TKL8255 processor options support the DDR4-2400 maximum memory interface speed.

Note: The Intel® Core™ i7 and Intel® Core™ i5 processor options do not support ECC memory.  ECC memory DIMMs are cost effective and can be used with these processor options, but the processors will ignore the ECC functionality of the memory DIMMs.

These long-life processors built on the Intel® 14nm Micro-architecture (i.e. Kaby Lake and Skylake) feature native PCI Express 3.0 links to the system backplane and utilize a 8GT/s DMI3 interface to the board’s Intel® C236 PCH.  Additional embedded and non-embedded processor options are available for use on the TKL8255 system host board. Intel® Xeon® processor options feature Intel® HD Graphics P630 or P530.  Intel® Core processor options feature Intel® HD Graphics 630 or 530.  Both graphic engines feature DirectX 12 and OpenGL 4.4 support and can output 4K resolutions (4096×2304 @60Hz when utilizing DisplayPort output)

Memory

64GB maximum when utilizing 16GB DDR4 DIMMs.  The board’s two, dual-channel DDR4-2400 memory interfaces have two DIMM slots apiece that support unbuffered, ECC PC4-17000 DDR4 memory DIMMs.

All available TKL8255 processor options support the DDR4-2400 maximum memory interface speed.

PCI Express Edge Card Interfaces

Standard PICMG 1.3 PCI Express Interfaces – Automatically adapts to graphics or server-class backplane PCIe link configurations – one x16 and one x4 or two x8 and one x4 PCIe links.  The direct PCIe links from the board’s processor (links A0, A1 and A2 ) may operate as either PCIe Gen 1.1 or PCIe Gen 2.0 depending on the backplane design.  The x4 link from the board’s C206 PCH (link B0) also supports PCIe 1.1 and 2.0 interfaces and can operate as either one x4 link or bifurcate into four, x1 PCIe links automatically.  An optional x4 PCIe 1.1/2.0 link is also available for use with a IOB33 expansion module to a PICMG 1.3 backplane equipped with a PCIe Expansion Slot.

Video Interfaces

2 – Digital Video Port  Located on the TKL8255 itself, these DVI-D port supports standard digital video cable connections. Use the Trenton dual DVI-D connector I/O bracket (part number 198500001166-00) for simplifed DVI-D video integration into your system design.

1 – DisplayPort – Located on the I/O bracket of the TKL8255, DisplayPort is a modern video cable connection capable of supporting many advanced graphical capabilities, including High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), DisplayPort Content Protection (DPCP) “4K” resolutions, up to 8 channels of 24-bit, 192kHz audio and Stereoscopic 3D video output.  The DisplayPort cable has an integrated locking mechanism for application security in high-vibration environments.

Multiple video connections are an inherent system design advantage of Trenton’s TKL8255 featuring the SHB’s processor options and the Intel® C236 chipset.  The Intel® HD Graphics 530 technology is featured in the graphics controller engine of these Skylake processor options. Utilizing twenty-four (24) execution units, Intel HD Graphics 530 provides significant gains in 3D performance while lowering power consumption over previous graphical engine implementations.  This graphics engine supports a total of three display interfaces with a base operational frequency of 350MHz and maximum shared memory of 1.7GB.  Some processor options support an increased Dynamic Frequency boost when additional graphical computational power is required.  The integrated graphics controller of the board’s processor dynamically utilizes a portion of the system memory based on the OS and the amount of memory installed.  All processors support maximum video resolutions of 4096×2304@60Hz via DisplayPort.

Ethernet Interfaces

This LAN interface may be accessed either by connector P18 on the TKL8255 or via the LAN interface connection on a PICMG® 1.3 backplane.

BP LAN Cable Option via P18 – You can build your own alternate backplane LAN cable using the instructions in the Jumpers, Connectors and Memory document for the TKL8255 or you can take advantage on this third LAN interface by using the pre-made alternate backplane LAN cable with Trenton part number: 193500001150-00

On-Board Interfaces

Four USB 3.0 and Six USB 2.0 ports – The two on the I/O bracket, and two located on one of the dual-interface onboard headers support the USB3 device interface while one additional dual-interface onboard header and the four routed to SHB edge connector “C” for use on a PICMG 1.3 backplane support six USB2 interfaces.

All six SATA ports on the TKL8255 support 600MB/s data transfers. In other words, all ports support SATA Gen 3.0 devices.  The ports may be used for either independent SATA drive operation, “JBOD” or in RAID 0,1,5 and 10 drive array system configurations.

Watchdog Timer

The TKL8255 provides a programmable watchdog timer with programmable timeout periods of 100 msec, 1 second, 10 seconds or 1 minute via board component U11.  When enabled the WDT (i.e. U11) will generate a system reset.  WDT control is supplied via the General Purpose IO pins from the Intel® C236 Platform Controller Hub (PCH).  The PCH’s GPIO_LVL2 register controls the state of each GPIO signal.  This 32-bit register is located within GPIO IO spaces.  The GPIO_BASE IO address is determined by the values programmed into the PCH’s LPC Bridge PCI configuration at offset 48-4B(h).

Nominal Temperature**:   0°C to 50°C for all processor options except the Intel Xeon E3-1275 v6.  Maximum operating temperature is 45°C when using the Intel Xeon E3-1275 v6 processor.

*350LFM of continuous airflow must be applied to the board to reach the maximum operating temperature stated. The maximum extended temperature was reached during lab testing with proper engineering safety margins. During extended temperature testing, the Windows 10 operating system was running in idle with the Intel Core i3-7101TE processor installed on the board. Other extended operating temperature conditions may apply to your specific system application.
